I NEVER write reviews, in fact, I think this is my first. My wife and I took a chance on this little place predicated on the connection between Teresa's Osaka in Tom's River. They've got a nice looking website and seem to be dedicated to the delicately fine art that is sushi. I'm sorry to report, however, that this was indeed the worst experience we've ever had with sushi. We've eaten everywhere from Sagami in Collingswood, Fuji in Haddonfield, Megu in Cherry Hill (our current favorite), Hanabi in EHT (our eternal favorite but now closed), Blue Ribbon in Soho and a bunch of places on the West Coast that we've forgotten the names of. In between, we've tried all the supermarkets and overnight Asian pop-up bars....needless to say, we've eaten quite a bit. Granted, we don't expect much from most places either. I've just named the more notable ones. Trying Osaka tonight did not carry too much in the way of expectations either, but because it was THAT BAD I'm writing to warn any potential explorers like ourselves. In all fairness, we did order it "to go" and we are very well aware of the rapid decline in quality that occurs when anyone takes a meal home. With that being said, however, the quality of the food was so poor that it was only suitable for the garbage, which is where it ALL in fact went to...$65 dollars worth: two soups, two salads and four rolls into our TRASH CAN. This restaurant will need to seriously retool and pull it together if they expect to survive much longer. They will most likely have to deal with the board of health too; in the ten minutes I was inside while waiting for my order, the sushi chef accepted a cash tip from a departing customer and failed to wash his hands before going right back into preparation. If we didn't live 1/2 hour away, I would have driven everything back and asked for a refund. SERIOUSLY...and I've never done that before either. It befuddles us why, living on the coast as we do, we can't find find FRESH fish at a sushi establishment. The sliced tuna on the Osaka Red Rose Roll not only looked old and discolored, it smelled horrible (like old fish) and was completely inedible. The sliced tuna that accompanied the avocado boat wasn't any better and the soft shell crab tempura inside the spider roll was like deep fried cardboard. The rice was overly glutinous and mushy and overall, all the ingredients were old and poor grade. We would have been far better off driving less and stopping for Shop-Rite's pre-packaged rolls. This is the type of establishment that gives other sushi restaurants a bad name, especially coming from first-timers who don't know any better. If you live in the area and are looking for a decent local sushi restaurant, I recommend driving north or west and staying as far away from here as possible. I would have given it NO STARS if that were possible.
This place is really cool. Its right in the marina, so you can sit bayside and enjoy the breeze. Really fresh fish and the sushi guy makes great cuts. The food from the kitchen is banging too.
